What is Varicose Veins?
varicose veins are enlarged, twisted blood vessels that commonly occur in the legs. Varicose veins are also known by other names, such as varicoses or varicosities, and usually occur on the thighs or calves. It can develop if the valves of the vein get weak or damaged. This problem arises due to blood pooling, i.e., if you are standing for a long period of time or walking long distances without rest.
Varicose Veins Treatment
Varicose veins surgery is not always necessary unless it causes any complications or discomfort. It is usually only necessary if varicose veins are swollen, bulgy, or twisted and cause discomforts such as itching, pain, or a burning sensation. If not treated on time, it may lead to blood clots or skin ulcers.
Causes & Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Varicose veins commonly develop if you stand or walk for longer periods of time without rest. There are a few common causes, namely pregnancy, heavy weight, aging, genetics, etc. Some of the journals have also stated that, compared to men, the chance of developing varicose veins in women is higher.
Symptoms
- Swollen or bulgy skin over veins
- Dermatitis (an itchy rash)
- Burning or throbbing sensation
- Change in the skin color (may be blue or dark purple)
Treatment of Varicose Veins
Before conducting the varicose veins operation, your doctor will start with a venous doppler ultrasound, which helps the doctor evaluate the direction and speed of blood flow in your body through the veins. The varicose veins are treated by either closing or removing them. The type of surgical treatment for varicose veins is decided after weighing several factors, such as your age, severity, the extent of varicose veins, and many more;
Ligation and stripping
The ligation and stripping of varicose veins technique involve tying off the veins and then removing them with the help of a thin, flexible wire. It includes two small incisions, one near the groin and one around your knee or ankle (depending upon the location of the varicose vein).
Sclerotherapy
In this process, your doctor injects some special foam into your veins. This forces the blood to flow from other healthy veins.
Endothermal ablation
This is the procedure that uses heat from the laser (endovenous laser ablation) or radio waves (radiofrequency ablation) to close the infected veins.
Phlebectomy
This is the easiest method of removing the veins. After numbing the area, the doctor will make 3-4 small cuts and surgically remove the varicose vein.
Advantages
- Better lifestyle
- Getting rid of pain
- Less chance of a skin ulcer or blood clot
- Less post-operative complications
- Fast recovery
- Less-pain
Challenges
- Bleeding or infection
- Pain over the vein
- Bruising and swelling
- Nerve damage (very rare)
Cost of Varicose Veins Surgery
The surgical treatment for varicose veins in India usually ranges between 30,000 and 1,20,000 INR. However, it depends on several factors, such as hospitals in different cities, the extent of varicose vein severity, and many others.
