What is Hemithyroidectomy?
Hemithyroidectomy refers to the surgical removal of one of the thyroid lobes and part of the isthmus, the connection between two lobes. This is performed to eradicate symptomatic or cancerous nodules from one side, remove goiters, or treat symptoms of hyperthyroidism (a hyperfunctioning thyroid). Your doctor may also recommend hemithyroidectomy for some cosmetic reason, like the removal of an unsightly lump that has developed in front of the neck.
Hemithyroidectomy Surgery
Hemithyroidectomy surgery is also known as thyroid lobectomy or partial thyroidectomy. This surgery is performed together by the surgeon and endocrinologist, who treat your body’s hormone imbalance. It is performed under general anesthesia, and an incision is made to remove one of the two thyroid lobules. It takes between 2 to 4 hours, depending on how much thyroid tissue the surgeon removes.
Causes & Symptoms of Disordered Thyroid Gland
Hemithyroidectomy can be performed if your body has an autoimmune problem, too much or less iodine in the diet, or a tumour (cancerous or non-cancerous) in the pituitary gland, consumption of thyroid medication, a swelling in the thyroid gland-goiter, or an inflammatory process.
Symptoms
- Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
- Large nodule or goiter
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Lump in front of the neck
Treatment of Thyroid Gland
Before the doctor starts the surgery process, they will order imaging tests or an ultrasound. It helps in diagnosing the type of disorder and side of the thyroid lobule to be removed.
To access the thyroid gland, one of the neck's skin creases is dissected. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep during the procedure. Your surgeon will make an incision to remove one of the two thyroid lobules. It is necessary to have a surgical drain through a catheter (a small tube), which is inserted for at least one night after surgery. The surgical drain can typically be removed on the second postoperative day after the draining has stopped. Once your surgery is done, the incision will be closed with stitches (sutures).
Advantages
- Balanced hormones
- Relieves compression
- Lower risk of hyperthyroidism and hypocalcemia
- Better muscle and bone health
Challenges
- Bleeding and infection
- Sore throat
- Voice change
- Injury to the esophagus or other nerves
- Hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone)
Cost of Hemithyroidectomy
Hemithyroidectomy surgery can be costly as it involves the treatment of very delicate organs with a high risk of infection. The average cost of hemithyroidectomy surgery in India is around 80,000 to 1.5 lakh INR. The cost can differ due to several factors, such as high-tech instruments, the doctor’s fee, infected lobules, patients’ complications, and many others.
