What is Skin Cyst?
Skin cysts are the fluid-filled sacs or abnormal tissue masses, usually benign (non-cancerous), that develop beneath the skin. It contains fluid, air, dead skin cells, or a semi-solid substance that gets infected and turns into an abscess. They are common and harmless, but they can be painful when infected or ruptured. In medical language, they are also known as sebaceous cysts, epidermal cysts, epithelial cysts, or keratin cysts. They can occur on any part of the body but are most common on the face, neck, trunk, or other parts with more hair follicles. There are different types of skin cysts, such as
Epidermoid Cysts – They can appear anywhere on the body
Sebaceous Cysts - They can appear anywhere in the body where there is a sebaceous gland (an oil-absorbing gland).
Acne Cysts – They occur where inflammation due to acne develops.
Pilar Cysts – They are found on the scalp
Skin Cyst Removal Surgery
Skin cysts do not always require surgery, but keeping an eye on them is very necessary as they can get infected or be accompanied by pain. If it is just drained, like a balloon, it will fill up again, so complete removal of the sac is important to prevent future infection.
Surgery is usually conducted under local anaesthesia by peeling out the cyst from under the skin through a small incision made over it. Once the skin has been sewn together, a tiny scar will result. After surgery, stitches may dissolve or be removed within 7 to 10 days after surgery. A stitch might not be needed if the incision is very small (minimally invasive).
Causes & Symptoms of Skin Cyst
A cyst under the skin is formed when a dead cell from the epidermis layer moves deeper into the skin and starts multiplying instead of shedding. Skin cysts are caused by a blocked hair follicle, blockage in ducts, swollen hair follicles, infection, skin injury, or certain genetic disorders.
Symptoms
- A lump or knot under the skin
- A small blackhead in the centre of the cyst
- Thick yellow, foul-smelling drainage
- Tender pain in the cyst
- Redness, inflammation, and itching in the vicinity of the cyst
Treatment of Skin Cyst
Skin cysts are often confused with an abscess, boil, or cancerous lump, so diagnosing the cyst is important. They are of different sizes, so sometimes it can be seen with the naked eye, but in certain cases, your doctor or dermatologist might diagnose it with an MRI, CT scan, or ultrasound. The surgical treatment is usually performed under local anaesthesia and can be done within 20–45 minutes. Your doctor can choose any of the below procedures depending on the severity of your cyst:
Incision and Drainage
In this procedure, the doctor makes a small incision on the cyst and gently drains out the pus from it. This is the most common procedure to treat cysts, as it’s an easy method and requires minimal time. To prevent further infection, the doctor will clean the wound with a sterile saline solution or wick and cover it with a wound dressing. The chance of recurrence is high with incision and drainage procedure.
Injection
During the injection procedure, a doctor injects some medicine into the skin to help the cyst by reducing inflammation and pain. As compared to other procedures, this treatment includes no pain, no scar, and less chance of infection.
Fine needle aspiration
It involves a large-bore needle inserted into an infected area. Then the pus is drained out using the needle syringe. Because it is less painful, technically easier, and relatively inexpensive, this is the preferred method for treating most cysts on the breast skin.
Minor Surgery
This procedure is used if the cyst under the skin is large and you want to prevent it from recurring. In this treatment procedure, your doctor will make a large cut on the cyst and pull out the whole cyst. The minor surgery procedure can result in a scar, which will disappear gradually.
Advantages
- Eliminates pain
- Better lifestyle
- Prevents further cancer
- Relieves redness, pus, and inflammation
Challenges
- Scarring
- Bleeding and infection
- Poor cosmetic yield
- Itching during wound recovery
