What is Parathyroid Adenoma?
An adenoma is a non-cancerous (benign) tumour affecting one or more parathyroid glands, a pair of two small, oval-shaped glands located next to the thyroid gland in the neck. An adenoma causes hyperparathyroidism, a condition where the parathyroid gland starts producing more parathyroid hormones (PTH) than your body needs.
Parathyroid Adenoma Surgery
Any disbalance in the parathyroid hormone can disturb the normal calcium balance in your body. This condition can lead to many health problems, such as kidney stones, decreased bone density, memory loss, depression, etc., creating an urgency for adenoma surgery.
Causes & Symptoms of Parathyroid Adenoma
The exact cause of parathyroid adenomas is still unknown, but, in most cases, it is believed to develop due to a genetic problem. Exposure to radiation at a young age or a disbalance in calcium levels can also lead to the development of adenomas in the parathyroid gland. Women aged 50 to 70 are more likely to develop adenomas than men.
Symptoms
- Weakness or tiredness
- Memory loss or depression
- Bone and joint pain
- Kidney stones
Treatment of Parathyroid Adenoma
Before the surgery, your doctor will diagnose the extent of the tumour through a blood test, as adenomas can cause too much production of PTH. Your doctor may also diagnose you with an x-ray, CT scan, or MRI to check your bone density.
Parathyroid adenomas are typically treated through surgery. To access the adenoma, one of the neck's skin creases is dissected. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia, which means you’ll be asleep during the procedure.
Your surgeon will tailor the surgery and make an incision near the gland (around 4 cm) after scanning the adenoma tumour location. Tumors can be diagnosed through a sestamibi nuclear medicine scan, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The surgeon then dissects the abnormal gland with no risk to the vocal cords or other organs. Surgical tape or a skin adhesive is used to close the skin after layering sutures are placed in the tissue to close the wound.
Advantages
- Balanced parathyroid hormone (PTH)
- Controlled calcium levels
- Protects against future cancer
- Better muscle and bone health
Challenges
- Bleeding and infection
- Sore throat or voice change
- Injury to the esophagus or other nerves
- Hypoparathyroidism (low parathyroid hormone)
Cost of Parathyroid Adenoma Surgery
The cost of parathyroid adenoma surgery varies depending on the size of the tumor, the affected gland, the patient's co-morbidities, and a variety of other factors. The average cost of adenoma removal surgery in India can be approximately 80,000 INR, including hospitalisation and medications.
