What is Spleen?
The spleen is a fist-sized organ located under the rib cage on the left side of the abdomen. It fights off infection and also filters the blood by removing dead cells, making it an important organ in the human body.
Spleen Removal Surgery
To completely or partially remove the spleen after the infection or enlargement is diagnosed-surgeons perform a splenectomy. It is also performed if the spleen is ruptured or if a tumour (benign or malignant) is found in the spleen.
Causes & Symptoms of Infected Spleen
The enlargement of the spleen can be caused by various infections and diseases, such as viral infections such as mononucleosis, bacterial infections such as syphilis or endocarditis (infection in the inner lining of your heart), parasitic infections such as malaria, liver-affecting diseases such as cirrhosis, pressure on the veins in the spleen or liver, hemolytic anaemia (early destruction of red blood cells), and some metabolic disorders.
Symptoms
- Enlarged spleen
- Ruptured spleen
- Blood disorder
- Tumors or certain infections in the spleen
- Spleen-related cancers
- Hydatid cysts
Treatment for Enlarged Spleen
Open Splenectomy
When the spleen becomes too large, it is removed through a single large incision. To access the spleen, a larger surgical cut is made to disconnect the muscles and tissues. After the spleen is removed, sutures and stitches are used to seal the wound.
Laparoscopic Splenectomy
If the spleen is not massively enlarged, laparoscopy is usually the most preferred method for removing the spleen. The best surgeon recommends laparoscopic surgery because it tends to faster recovery, with a smaller incision and results in less pain than open surgery.
Advantages
- Less post-operative complications
- Fast recovery
- Fewer scars and pain
- Lower risk of infection
Challenges
- Damage to other organs
- Injury and bleeding
- CO2 gas may create discomfort
- Short-term pain and swelling
Cost of Spleen Removal Surgery
The cost of a splenectomy (spleen removal surgery) depends on various factors and may range between Rs. 80,000 and Rs. 1,30,000.
