What is Hernia?
When an internal part of the body, such as the intestine or omentum (abdominal fat), protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall to the inguinal wall, this is referred to as a hernia. It appears as a lump or swelling or as an enlarged scrotum. The lump frequently appears when you lift something heavy, and when you lie down, it goes away.
Hernia Surgery
Hernias are usually treated with surgery, either open or laparoscopically. It can also disappear within a few days if the effect of a hernia is very low or if the hernia is in its early stages. There are several types of hernias depending on the location they occur, such as inguinal, femoral, incisional, umbilical, ventral, and hiatal hernias.
Causes & Symptoms of Hernia
The risk of hernia occurs more often in men than in women and can also be congenital (present since birth). Lifting heavy weights, pregnancy, being overweight, aging, having frequent heavy coughs, and straining the abdominal area on the toilet seat (due to constipation) can all cause hernias.
Symptoms
- Sharp abdominal pain and vomiting
- Noticeable bulge or lump
- Long-term hernia pain
- Pain and discomfort in everyday activity
Treatment of Hernia
Watchful Waiting
Each surgical procedure has its benefits and harms, so the patient's surgeon decides on the most effective strategy. In certain cases, the effect of a hernia is very low, or if the hernia is in its early stages, the doctor recommends the patient wait and monitor the situation.
Open Surgery
In this procedure, a large incision is made, the hernia is pushed back or removed depending on its severity, and the skin incision is stitched together using sutures, staples, or surgical glue.
Laparoscopic Surgery
Laparoscopic surgical repair of a hernia enables the use of smaller incisions, facilitating a quicker recovery after the procedure. It is also used for subsequent surgeries to avoid past scars and is less likely to result in complications or infection.
Advantages
- Could go home the same day of surgery
- Fast recovery
- Fewer scars
- Less pain
- Lower risk of bleeding and infection
Challenges
- Damage to other organs
- Injury and bleeding
- Uncomfortable pain while sleeping
- CO2 gas may create discomfort
- Short-term pain and swelling
Cost of Hernia Surgery
The cost for laparoscopic hernia surgery in India starts at 70,000 INR and increases depending upon the complications, severity of the patient and the type of Hospital selected for operation.
