    What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is an effective surgical procedure performed to examine the organs inside the abdomen and pelvis using a laparoscope - a thin tube similar to a telescope. A laparoscope has a tiny high-resolution camera and high-intensity light on the end that sends image representation to the video monitor.

    Laparoscopic Surgery Procedure

Laparoscopic surgery is predominantly known as keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery as tiny incisions (usually 0.5-1.5 cm) are made using minimal access to view affected areas. Without opening it all the way up like in traditional open surgery, small 2-4 incisions are made, one for the camera and the other for surgical instruments.

Hence, laparoscopic surgeon uses this technique for complex treatment such as gallbladder surgery, appendix surgery, hernia surgery, splenectomy, adrenalectomy, anti-reflux operations, and bariatric weight loss surgery or even for cancer/tumour removals.

Why Laparoscopic Surgery Over Traditional (Open) Surgery?

According to data, around 13 million laparoscopic surgeries are performed yearly globally. Additionally, it is anticipated to grow by 1% over the subsequent five years.

Compared to traditional open surgery or exploratory laparotomy, Laparoscopic surgery has been shown significantly minimize post-operative discomfort and recovery time. In open surgery, the surgeon makes an incision in the abdomen, which takes a lot of time. Laparoscopic surgery is much less painful than extensive incisions into skin and muscle and is more advanced and quicker.

Additionally, there is a lower chance of blood loss and infection, less pain, minimal scar after the operation, shorter stay in the hospital, faster recovery, quick healing of scars, and lower risk in laparoscopic surgery.

The biggest differences between laparotomy(open) and laparoscopic surgery are the size of the incision. You might wonder why the incision's size is crucial?

Answer is simple! Bigger the incision's size, longer it will take to recover and high will be the risk & pain and vice versa. Earlier 6-12 inches long incisions were made making the surgical procedure complex and daunting. In contrast, laparoscopic treatment is generally safer as tiny incisions are made of nearly 0.5cm which is barely visible and less painful making it a great option.
