What is Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST)
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors or GIST are the types of cancerous or abnormal cells that develop in the wall of the gastrointestinal tract, most often in the stomach or small intestine. These tumours must be removed by surgery before they enlarge or become metastatic (spread to other organs).
Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumour Surgery
Gastrointestinal stromal tumour surgery is the surgical removal of the tumour in the gastrointestinal tract, i.e., stomach, intestines, or colon. The surgery involves the removal of the tumour through open or laparoscopic surgery. The type of treatment depends on the location and size of the tumour. Surgery might be needed if the cancerous tissue has not spread to other organs. If it has spread, it is surgically treated along with targeted therapy, i.e., chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Causes & Symptoms of GIST
The exact cause of a gastrointestinal stromal tumour is still unknown. But experts believe it develops due to certain inherited genetic syndromes that a child gets from their parents or due to ageing. There is still no approved lifestyle, physical, or bacterial cause for gist.
Symptoms
- Blood in the stool
- Vomiting
- Pain in the abdomen
- Tiredness
- Trouble swallowing
- Low appetite
Treatment of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor
Your doctor will perform a diagnosis to determine the size and location of the tumour before beginning treatment. The diagnosis can be done through a physical exam, CT scan, MRI, endoscopic or ultrasound. The type of treatment is then recommended as per the severity of the tumour.
Laparoscopic Surgery
This procedure is used if the tumour is in an early stage (2-3 cm). Your surgeon will make 3-5 small incisions on the abdomen where the tumour developed and insert the laparoscope device through one incision while performing the surgery with the others. The device helps monitor the infected area and displays it on a computer.
Local wide excision or Open Surgery
If the size of the tumour exceeds 5 cm, then your surgeon might recommend open surgery. In this procedure, a wide incision is made using a scalpel (a sharp knife), and the tumour is removed along with some nearby healthy tissue.
Targeted Therapy
For metastatic or recurrent gist cancer, or if the gist cancer is very small in size, a doctor may also recommend targeted therapy. In this method, your doctor will use certain drugs, such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), to identify and kill the cancerous cell. This method does not harm any healthy tissue, unlike radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
Advantages
- Better lifestyle
- Avert further cancer
- Minimal incision
- Relieve abdominal pain
Challenges
- Mild nausea
- Stomach upset
- Bleeding from gist tumours
- Skin changes
- Muscle pain
