What is Gastrointestinal Cyst?
Gastrointestinal cysts or intestinal duplication cysts are the fluid-filled sacs or abnormal tissue masses that develop along the gastrointestinal organs, i.e., gallbladder, liver, stomach, mouth, esophagus, and intestines. They are uncommon and congenital (develop before birth), but they are dangerous, commonly affecting the esophagus, stomach, or small intestine. Most cases of intestinal duplication cysts are found during childhood. They are of different shapes, sizes, and severity and can develop along any part of the gastrointestinal wall.
Causes & Symptoms of Gastrointestinal Cyst
There is no single cause for the formation of cysts in the gastrointestinal tract. However, since it is congenital, it is believed that it is due to a family history of gastrointestinal cysts. Other causes may also include ageing, gender or injury.
Symptoms
- Abdominal obstruction
- Breathing problem
- Jaundice
- Intestinal blockage
Treatment of Gastrointestinal Cyst
The diagnosis of gastrointestinal cysts is done by CT scan, MRI, or endoscopic ultrasonography. Your doctor will then recommend the type of treatment depending on the location and size of the cyst and the patient’s severity.
Laparoscopic
This procedure makes 3-5 small incisions on the abdomen and inserts the laparoscope device through one incision while performing the surgery with the others. The device helps monitor the infected area and displays it on a computer.
Endoscopic
The treatment uses an endoscope, an instrument with a laser and camera attachment, to diagnose and treat certain GI conditions. It is inserted through the mouth or other natural openings in the body.
Robotic
The surgeon performs cyst surgery by using a computerised system to manipulate mechanical arms that are holding a camera and surgical tools. Compared to human hands and wrists, robotic arms have a wider range of motion, offering greater flexibility for difficult, delicate treatments.
Open Surgery
It involves making one large cut and treating the infected area manually.

- Better lifestyle
