What is Fibroadenoma?
A fibroadenoma is a non-cancerous solid breast lump. They are smooth and firm to feel, round in shape with no fluids in them and have an average size of 1 inch. They do not grow faster or spread to other organs like cancerous breast tumours, posing a life-threatening threat. Fibroadenomas are very common and often develop in young women (under the age of 30) during puberty. There are two types of fibroadenomas:
1. Complex fibroadenomas
2. Giant fibroadenomas
Fibroadenoma Removal Surgery Procedure
Fibroadenoma removal surgery involves the removal of a non-cancerous tumor, such as a breast fibroadenoma. This procedure is also known as a lumpectomy or an excisional breast biopsy.
The presence of fibroadenoma can be examined through a breast self-exam, medical exam, or imaging tests such as a screening mammogram or a breast ultrasound. Usually, fibroadenomas cease to grow after menopause, but they may need to be removed before they turn into large fibroadenomas or phyllodes tumours.
Fibroadenomas do not always require surgery. If the tumour is greater than 2 cm but is growing fast or is painful and causing discomfort during normal activities, you might need surgery to remove it. Doctors also recommend surgery if you have a family history of breast cancer.
Causes & Symptoms of Fibroadenoma
Although the exact cause of fibroadenomas is unknown, doctors believe the hormone oestrogen plays a role in their formation. It can occur as a result of hormonal fluctuations (periods or pregnancy) or as a result of a breast abscess or cyst. Many women in their 20s and 30s develop fibroadenoma, which shrinks after they go through menopause.
Symptoms
- Lump in the breast tissue
- Swelling, bulge, or bump on the breast skin
- Change in breast’s shape and size
- Itching or irritation on the skin near the breast
- Pain and tenderness in the breast
Treatment of Fibroadenoma
Fibroadenomas can be diagnosed with a breast self-exam, a medical exam, or an imaging test such as a screening mammogram or a breast ultrasound. Before the surgery, wire localization is done to identify the location of the fibroadenoma in the abnormal breast area.
Lumpectomy
In this procedure, the surgeon removes the lump plus a margin of healthy breast tissue through an incision. Wire localization (needle wire is inserted) is done before the surgery to identify the lump in or near the abnormal breast area. The doctor will make a small incision in the breast and remove the fibroadenoma.
Later, a pathologist examines a sample of the excised healthy tissue to ensure that the tissue is not cancerous and that all malignancy has been removed.
Cryoablation
The cryoablation technique uses ultrasound guidance to completely destroy benign tumours using a tool called a cryoprobe. The doctor applies liquid nitrogen by inserting a probe through a small cut in the skin near the lump to freeze the tissue. This in-office treatment might just take a few minutes to complete. The body gradually dissolves the dead cells after the fibroadenoma is eliminated, preserving the normal appearance of the breast.
Vacuum-assisted excision
Doctor uses this technique to remove the smaller-size fibroadenoma from the breast. They make a small incision through which they insert a probe in the skin to reach the lump, and then a vacuum device sucks it out. The procedure might create a small dent in the breast where the lump has been removed.
Advantages of Lumpectomies
- Prevents cancer
- Single and minimal incisions
- Complete removal of non-cancerous lumps
- Improved quality of life
Challenges and Complications
- Fluid discharge
- Infection
- Risk of hematoma (bleeding outside a blood vessel)
- Short-term pain and swelling
- Scarring

How to treat fibroadenoma without surgery?
